Common Challenges of LED Outdoor Display

Maybe you’ve seen an increase in digital signs over the years. As you drive along the highway, you may notice a giant outdoor LED wall in place of a written billboard. Or a car wash sign advertising daily specials or saying, “Come in. We’re ready to serve.” This once-utopian concept (similar to Marty McFly’s hoverboard) is now realistic and popular in everyday routines. Although many business owners pick Outdoor LED Display signage as a solution, they have certain drawbacks. This post will highlight these issues.

Image Quality
One typical issue about LED signage is that their “color dots” are quite visible to the human eye. The visuals they produce are far from “high definition.” Instead, they appear pixelated, giving viewers a less-than-ideal experience. This is a significant issue, especially when practically every other display technology evolves in tandem with consumers’ expectations. LED signs are becoming increasingly inadequate in comparison with each advancement.

High Costs
LED signs have a higher initial investment than other kinds of signage. A static sign is typically made of wood, metal, plastic, and rubber. Furthermore, electrical components, for instance, lights, are frequently included to make the sign visible at night. LED signs, in contrast, have a broader range of electrical components, including circuitry, wiring, computer chips, drives, lights, and a lot more.

Of course, there are additional costs apart from the one-time purchase cost. LED systems are frequently very heavy and big, necessitating rigging equipment for installation. Because they are more intricate and fragile, their installation is likewise more difficult.

Light Pollution
The International Dark Sky Association, a well-known expert on light pollution, issued an essay in 2019 that discussed the negative impacts of excess light from LED billboards and signs. They hypothesized that a perimeter LED display might be approximately ten times brighter than ordinary billboards. Consider that the brightness of a typical television varies from 500 to 1000 nits (Candelas per square meter — a unit of brightness measured over a square meter). Of all, this is just a rough estimate. Some typical televisions cost less. Others are stronger. Consider that the typical range for outdoor LED signs is between 5,000 and 8,000 nits.

Again, this is an estimate based on a variety of criteria. Even allowing for some variation in these estimates, LED signs are hundreds of percentage points brighter than even the brightest indoor house TVs, which we all know are unsafe.

Consider the consequences of this light always spilling into the night sky and being visible to spectators thousands of miles away. According to the IDA, this light pollution can impact “breeding, feeding, and orienting activities in nocturnal species.” While these are all significant factors, we must also consider the effects on our physical health. Were our eyes designed to deal with light at such a high frequency and capacity?
The answer is no.

Most of us are unaware that our eyes are now being exposed to multiple sources of possibly dangerous light, rather than one when we’re outside on a bright, sunny day. And, as our world continues on this digital path, all of that bright light begins to feel more natural to us. An incredibly brilliant LED billboard outside a shop no longer appears to be a concern. And we no longer have to travel to Times Square to see one. All we have to do is drive down any freeway through practically any medium-sized city, and bam! Much of that same technology is aimed squarely at us.

LED signs offer a great deal of promise for companies who want to showcase themselves uniquely. However, they’re not without their challenges. It’s important to keep these potential problems in mind before choosing LED signage, particularly if you’re planning to put them in highly populated areas where people gather and enjoy the view.
